Job Summary:

The Riverside Church in NYC is seeking a Director of Stewardship and Development to plan and implement an annual congregational stewardship campaign and a robust development plan, including individual donors, corporate and foundation partners, major gifts and planned giving. Essential Job Responsibilities:

  1. Oversee and manage the development and implementation an annual stewardship campaign including the following elements:
  • Determine annual campaign targets, appeals, and giving levels.
  • Create campaign materials and rollout strategy in anticipation of harvest Sunday pledge day (Sunday before Thanksgiving).
  • Elaborate and execute strategy for retaining and increasing donors with a focus on online giving (following market trend). Stewardship Committee ?? Provide staff support, plan meeting agendas in close collaboration with chair and manage effective communication with chair and members. Work to get 100% participation in giving with the Stewardship Committee and Church Council.
  1. Plan and implement a comprehensive development plan including the following elements:
  • Planned giving ?? Oversee the deputy director in managing a comprehensive planned giving program, including bequests and wills.
  • Corporate partners and foundations ?? Oversee the annual giving officer in their management of the corporate partner and foundation portfolios - researching and applying for grants from corporate partners and foundation, state and federal sources.  Work in coordination with Riverside program staff to determine program priorities and align with grant opportunities.
  • Major gift program ?? Oversee the deputy director in managing the major gift program, seeking significant contributions to support the mission and long-term health of the Church.  Some initiatives would include the following: cultivation breakfasts (or other contact) with ministerial leaders, donor solicitations, visit preparation for Senior Minister, use of leadership volunteers in solicitation.
  1. Oversee the coordinator of S&D in coordinating special events and appeals such as anniversary Celebration; a smaller fund raising event in conjunction with Homecoming and Candlelight a possibility; Giving Tuesday; Grateful Gift Market; Employee Giving; Community Service projects; James Washington Award breakfast third Sunday of May; small cultivation breakfasts with Senior Minister.

    4.   Manage and provide leadership and education to the Stewardship Coordinator

  • In conjunction with coordinator, set goals for that function and monitor progress.
  • Work closely with coordinator and systems administrator on implementing decisions for Raisers Edge.
  • Enable coordinator to achieve autonomy and growth in position.

Experience and Education Requirements:

  1. Education
  • Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) required. Undergraduate degree in finance, marketing, business administration or related field of interest
  • Advanced degree preferred
  1. Work Experience
  • Minimum of eight plus years of demonstrated development experience, preferably for a large, multifaceted nonprofit and/or religious institution
  • Development experience in New York City preferred
  • Demonstrated success in annual and planned giving, major gift solicitation and special events
  • Experience with Raisers Edge as fund raising data base preferred
  • Demonstrated technical fluency harnessed for fund raising, e.g. such tools as Crowd Funding, GoFundMe and Indego, as well as use of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
  • Experience working with volunteer committees
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically, design and implement strategies for campaigns and individual solicitations

  • A proven collaborative leader able to garner the respect of colleagues and congregants and motivate and train stewardship colleagues
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate ideas effectively and persuade others to accomplish challenging goals and objectives.
