JOB TITLE:  Program Manager (Chemistry), Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists

 

DEPARTMENT: Awards

 

REPORTS TO:  Associate Director, Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists

 

SUMMARY:

 

The Blavatnik Awards for Young Scientists recognize early-career researchers who have made groundbreaking advances in Life Sciences, Physical Sciences & Engineering, and Chemistry. The awards are independently administered by the Academy and funded by the Blavatnik Family Foundation, an active supporter of numerous leading educational, scientific, and cultural institutions throughout the United States and the world.  For more information about the four Blavatnik Awards programs, please visit www.blavatnikawards.org.

 

As a Topic-Area Specialist in Chemistry with focus on the Blavatnik National and Regional Awards programs, you are responsible for multiple phases of the awards process. While your primary responsibility is to the Blavatnik National and Regional Awards, you may also participate in the administration of other programs, if needed.

 

In this role, you will work with great scientists, be exposed to some of the most outstanding science in the world, and participate in ?driving the next generation of scientific innovation?.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Conduct a thorough evaluation of all Chemistry nominations to the respective awards. Implement a rigorous and fair process to screen and rank nominees, ensuring consistency across subject areas and programs.
  • Choose and recruit judges based on their expertise and standing.  Administer and facilitate in-person jury meetings.  Serve as primary point of contact for judges in your topic area and programs,
  • Prepare written, video, and multimedia materials to explain the honorees? work to a broad audience. Assist in interpreting complex scientific information for internal and external stakeholders.  Assist with writing, editing, and review of general promotional materials.
  • Work with other team members, the Academy?s operations team, and other vendors as needed to host the annual Blavatnik Science Symposium, Award Ceremonies for the respective awards programs, and other events.
  • Stay up-to-date with the major scientific milestones achieved by Blavatnik honorees in Chemistry and other fields, and help to promote them and their work through our social media channels and other outlets as appropriate.
  • Remain aware of other activities at the Academy, interacting with other teams and providing insight and support where possible.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:

None.

 

REQUIREMENTS:

  • PhD in an appropriate subject area of Chemistry.  One (1) to (3) three years postdoctoral research experience in an academic setting preferred. Additional experience in industry, scientific publishing, non-profit, or related setting is desirable. Experience with grant writing and program management a plus. 
  • Confidence, aptitude, and ability to evaluate applications beyond your primary field of study. Ability to translate complex scientific information into language accessible to non-scientists.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills. Ability to communicate professionally with a range of stakeholders.
  • Ability to work with multiple teams across departments and to be highly organized in managing multiple parallel projects with tight deadlines.  Meticulous attention to detail, while having a big-picture perspective on tasks and projects.

 

WORK SCHEDULE:

 

The Academy operates during standard business hours, Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm. Standard work week is 35 hours, unless otherwise noted.  Must be able to attend a few evening/weekend events per year.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

 

This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, etc. This is largely a sedentary role; however, some movement is required. Examples world be lifting files, opening filling cabinets and bending or standing as necessary.
