I. JOB SUMMARY

The Substance Abuse Supervisor (SAS) works closely with the members of the Leadership Team while also being responsible for all planning, organizing, operating, and staffing for the Substance Abuse program. The SAS is responsible for ensuring the Substance Abuse Program meets agency expectations and goals; works with program staff to ensure that a safe, therapeutic, supportive and accepting environment is maintained for the clients. The SAS manages program operations; directs, supervises and evaluates program staff.

 

II. DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Understands and has knowledge of the twelve-step recovery program.
  • Provide effective and inspiring leadership, as well as stewardship by actively leading all programs and services related to substance abuse services.
  • Represent, as assigned, MCHS to external constituency groups, including government and community groups.
  • Oversee the program staff to ensure that they are functioning within the requirements of their job duties; provide guidance, training, assistance, and support to staff when needed including planning, staffing, performance management, professional development, adjusting workloads as necessary, and addressing and resolving complaints to create a climate of teamwork and motivation.
  • Maintain a key understanding of industry trends that might present new business opportunities or elevate current operations to become more competitive.
  • Responsible for overseeing contractual negotiations with government entities, including mental health, and other entities and assisting/participating in the negotiations as necessary.
  • Provide individuals and their family members with therapy, education and information about addiction issues and about available services or programs and makes appropriate referrals when necessary.

 

III. BASIC COMPETENCIES

Education and Experience:

  • Master?s degree in Social Work, Counseling or Psychology required.
  • Possess a full license with the State of Michigan, or if a bachelor?s level graduate must hold the Certified Clinical Supervisor credential (CCS) or Certification in Substance Abuse.
  • Currently certified as an Alcohol Drug Counselor (CADC) or Certified Advanced Alcohol Drug Counselor (CAADC).
  • Three (3) years or more of experience in substance abuse and/or serious mental health disorders with adults and at-risk youth preferred.
  • Two (2) years or more of experience as a clinical supervisor preferred.

 

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Computer and software applications (Windows, MS Office, Internet applications, etc.) necessary to perform the duties of the position.
  • Clinical assessment and child therapy.
  • Principles and practices of social work or counseling, including the NASW Code of Ethics.
  • Michigan Department of Health and Human Services policies and procedures.
  • Family, child and group dynamics.
  • Motivational Interviewing Practice and techniques.
  • Understands and has knowledge of the twelve-step recovery program.

 

Skills and Abilities Needed:

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills to interact effectively with agency staff, government officials, and other external stakeholders.
  • Possess excellent organizational skills to prioritize and coordinate multiple activities, problems, and crisis situations concurrently.
  • Possess a high degree of personal accountability, responsibility, and independent decision-making abilities with the skills to plan, organize, develop, implement and interpret programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures of the organization.
  • Work flexible hours, when needed, which may include some evening and weekends.
